KS3

The syllabus for History in Year 7 has two main themes:

  • The first term of the year is spent studying some aspects of the History of Africa. We investigate the empire of Ancient Egypt, the growth and spread of Islam and also two of the empires of medieval Africa, in Zimbabwe and Mali.
  • The rest of the year is spent in investigating the History of medieval England. We look at the Norman Conquest and its effects as well as at the key features of and changes in the society and government of England from 1066 until 1485.

There are two main topic areas in Year 8 History:

  • Topic one, 'Renaissance and Reformation'  picks up on the material studied in Year 7; you will learn about how Europe was changing in the 1500s and how this helped to change the way people thought and felt. In particular, the important religious changes of the 1500s will be studied and you will learn how these changes impacted on the lives of people then and also how they continue to impact on our society today. The role of religious and other factors in 'the making of the United Kingdom is also considered.
  • Topic 2 explores the transformation of Britain into the largely urbanised and industrialised society we know today. You will look at a whole series of fascinating changes in the ways in which people lived and worked and will begin to understand how they linked together to produce a society where people live in towns and work in offices and factories. You will also study the consequences of these changes for public health and the quality of the lives people led.

The overall title of the Year 9 History course is 'War, Persecution, Freedom, and Justice'.

  • You will study the History of the Twentieth Century with a particular focus on the two world wars and their consequences as well as on the decline of the European Empires and the consequent foundation of new countries in Asia and Africa.
